Thonburi

With the extension of the BTS (Skytrain) to Krung Thonburi and Wongwian Yai Stations and beyond, Thonburi, on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River has become a popular residential destination for Thais and Western foreigners.

In 2019, the Gold Line will open from BTS Krung Thonburi to the ICONSIAM complex on Charoen Nakhon Road and Khlong San Junction, and by 2023 to Prajadhipok Road. By 2029 the Red Line will interchange with the Gold Line at Khlong San and BTS Wongwian Yai. A planned southern extension of the Purple Line will connect with the BTS at Wongwian Yai in 2024.

New condominiums in the neighbourhood average THB 120,000–160,000 per square meter. Recent and upcoming projects include:

  • IDEO Blucove Sathorn, THB 3.5–6.6 million
  • IDEO Mobi Sathorn, THB 2.8–9.5 million

  • ICONSIAM, a mixed-use project to open in 2018, with two luxury towers: Magnolias Waterfront Residences, THB 14 – 130 million, and The Residences at Mandarin Oriental Bangkok, THB 45.0 – 390 million

Five-star hotels along the river include the Millennium Hilton, The Peninsula, Ibis Bangkok Riverside, Anantara Riverside Bangkok Resort, AVANI Riverside and Klapsons The River Residences.

Among the many community malls are Sena Fest, Vue, Platform Wongwian Yai (including a Tops Supermarket), Big C Issaraphap and The Mall Thapra. River City Bangkok is easily reached by river ferry. ICONSIAM will include two luxury shopping complexes, and a Takashimaya department store.

In addition to the many dining choices available at local hotels, neighborhood options include The October, Natheethip and The Never Ending Summer (Thai), Tha Din Daeng Market (Thai “street food”), Pho Mor Fai (Vietnamese hotpot), Tale Thang and Somsak Pu Ob (seafood), Sorry I'm Hungry Burger Cafe, Charoen Thai Suki, Steak Sa-ard 1970, The 14th Barrel (American fusion), The Clock Out (Italian fusion) and Siam Ratana Bakehouse.

Much of the neighborhood's nightlife is found in the riverside hotels, particularly Three Sixty Lounge (Millennium Hilton), Bamboo Bar (Mandarin Oriental), Attitude (AVANI Riverside) and The River Bar (Peninsula). Other options include ID 4 Pub and Save Our Souls. Asiatique The Riverfront offers free ferries from Saphan Taksin.

Princess Mother Memorial Park, is an urban park and museum honoring the mother of King Rama IX. Chalermprakiet Forest Park has an outdoor exercise park. Other fitness options include Fitness First, Elegant Fitness, Vfitness, Jolly Fitness, and Make Friends Yoga Thonburi. Local churches include Sacred Light Baptist Church, Itsarapap Baptist Church, and Church of Santa Cruz. Several Thai temples are located along the Chao Phraya River and canals.

Notable neighborhood schools are Suksanari, Santa Cruz Convent and Santa Cruz Suksa Schools and Sang Arun School, and Bansomdejchaopraya Rajabhat and Dhonburi Rajabhat Universities. Private schools in the Silom area are easily accessible, including Shrewsbury International School, Assumption Suksa School, Assumption College and Bangkok Christian College.

Medical care is available at Samitivej Thonburi, Somdech Phra Pinklao and Taksin Hospitals.
